The artist/actor formerly known as Mos Def has been in the news of late for his supposed denial of entry into the U.S. for an upcoming tour he had planned. If you're wondering why the lifelong Brooklyn-native needed to re-enter the states; Yasiin Bey relocated to South Africa last year in a move that he recently addressed this past March:
"...I came to Cape Town in 2009 and it just hit me. I was like, 'Yeah.' I know when a good vibe gets to you. And, you know, I thought about this place every day from when I left." (Mail & Guardian)
It's been since revealed by Yasiin Bey's close friend Abdi Hussein that he was never denied entry into the U.S., but instead chose to move his tour dates due to other projects. The recent news has got me thinking about Mos and wondering when his next project would be released, when I came across this mixtape by Amerigo Gazaway.
Amerigo Gazaway is a Nashville-based DJ/producer and son of renowned Jazz trumpeter, Gary “El Buho” Gazaway. This latest release from his *Soul Mates* series is a mash-up of Bey acapellas and deconstructed samples of Marvin Gaye’s Motown masterpieces. This may be my Mos Def nostalgia talking, or the fact that you just can't go wrong with some motherfuckin Marvin Gaye, but this 'mixtape' is fucking genius (it reminds me alot of the Max Tannone projects "Ghostfunk" and "Dub Kweli.") This release brings back the classic Mos Def we came to love and reinvents his songs with a fresh, soulful twist. It's a dream collaboration of what could've been, brought to life. This is apparently 'Side One' so a Side Two is soon to follow, and we can't wait! This is the perfect soundtrack for the Summer! Download this now before it gets taken down! ~GodzIL
