Team Backpack is a media company that, at the risk of oversimplifying, highlights lyricism in Hip Hop by organizing events where underground and up-and-coming rappers can showcase their skills. Verses, originality and expertise are valued over record sales and the true art of the MC can shine in the form of its most primal state: the cypher. It was in one of these cypher videos that I came across the New York city foursome Loaf Muzik. The collective consists of Shadow the Great, Kidaf, Oso Dope and Shine Sinatra and their sound and emphasis on lyricism harkens back to the Golden Era of 90s Hip Hop. Their music not only brings back memories of underground New York acts like the Duck Down family and of course the Wu, but their rhythm and bounce also brings to mind the West Coast underground greats such as Souls of Mischief and the rest of the Hieroglyphics crew. By their own admission in the hyper energetic posse cut 'Shinobi Warz' they are here to "resurrect boom bap from that tomb" and though their sound is retro Loaf Muzik definitely have a bright future ahead.
