Bellows - Live at AS220, 11/19/08

This band from Providence, RI consists of a tuba, saxophone & drums and describes their music as “breath metal.” I know what you’re thinking right off the bat and no they do not sound like The Flying Luttenbachers. This is not jazz and even at their fastest they come nowhere near the speed of Weasel Walter’s spastic blastbeats, but it still sounds interesting nonetheless. I love the tone of the tuba and the fact that it replaces the bass, this is probably the closest thing to acoustic metal you will hear (not counting folk/Viking metal.) These five live tracks switch from nice ambient passages to raw, sinister bass tones and dissonant squeals. It definitely has the “feel” of metal and if they can capture all the low end and grit heard on these live songs then their studio cd is going to sound amazing!
